There are several things that a vehicle owner can do before going to the auto service mechanic for car repair. These are automotive preventive maintenance processes and diagnostic procedures that could minimize the need for auto AC repair, brakes repair, transmission repair or engine repair.

As soon as an owner receives his or her vehicle, one of the first things he or she is obliged to do is read the vehicle's owner's manual. Not just one reading will do, either. The owner should know the contents of the manual by heart and keep it readily accessible at all times. This is because all the necessary automotive maintenance procedures recommended by the manufacturer are indicated in the owner's manual, along with the frequency schedules for each maintenance procedure. These should be strictly complied with.

A vehicle owner should check gauge readings daily, taking note of any unusual changes. Belts, hoses and tires should likewise be checked regularly for damage or wear. Watch out for any strange sounds, vibrations or odors from the vehicle. These and warning lights from gauges should be heeded immediately. If the vehicle emits smoke at any time, it should promptly be pulled over and should not be driven until after it has been thoroughly checked by a qualified automotive mechanic. Leaks and drips seen beneath the vehicle are also signs of danger.

As the owner, you should know how your vehicle behaves under its best running condition. You will, therefore, be the best judge of any deviations in its performance, including handling, acceleration, deceleration, steering and braking. You should also notice when your vehicle's gas mileage decreases and if its fluid levels undergo drastic changes.

The proper documentation of your observations is very important. Keep a log in a notebook kept in your vehicle. Take note of each change and when it happened. Does it occur only periodically or is it a constant? Under what conditions do the symptoms appear? Is it while the engine is still cold or only when the engine has been heated? Does the problem appear upon acceleration, deceleration, shifting or braking? Does it occur at any speed?

You should report all your observations accurately to the automotive mechanic at the auto service shop. Refer to your notes to ensure that nothing is left out and you do not make mistakes. This will make an impact on your mechanic's diagnostics, although he will also inspect the vehicle, of course. Give your automotive mechanic enough time to make his diagnostic report. After all, he is the expert. After he has arrived at a conclusion, ask him to explain everything to you in layman's terms, including his concrete recommendations. Do not hesitate to ask questions until you clearly understand everything.

Ask for a detailed written report on your automotive mechanic's diagnostic findings and recommendations. It should include all the work that has to be done on your vehicle, the list of specific parts that need replacement, the cost of each replacement part and of labor, and the work schedule. No work should be started without your documented approval. If any additional work has to be done or any additional part has to be replaced, your approval should again be sought. Before you approve, it is your responsibility to compare costs with other service providers and suppliers. Do not allow yourself to be overcharged.

Take care of the aforementioned automotive preventive maintenance processes and diagnostic procedures to decrease the frequency of your vehicle's need for car repair such as auto AC repair, brakes repair, transmission repair or engine repair. When you do have to bring your vehicle to your auto service mechanic for car repair, follow the aforementioned tips on ensuring proper service and low costs.
